Why Mapleton Dryer Vents Clog Sooner Than People Expect

Big houses put the laundry in the wrong place

The floor plans that dominate Mapleton's housing put the laundry room where it is convenient for the household, which is usually near the bedrooms on an upper floor or in the middle of the main level. Neither of those is near an exterior wall. The duct therefore runs a long way, often with several elbows to get around framing, and sometimes terminates through the roof.

Every foot of duct and every bend costs airflow. Manufacturers publish a maximum equivalent length for exactly this reason, and each ninety-degree elbow typically counts as five extra feet against that budget. A run that is within specification on paper but has been fitted with an extra bend or two to clear a joist can be well over it in practice. When airflow drops, the moist air moves more slowly, lint stops staying airborne, and it settles. Once it starts settling it accumulates, which slows the air further. That is a feedback loop and it is why long runs do not degrade gradually so much as fall off a cliff.

What the symptoms mean

Clothes taking two cycles to dry is the first sign and the one most people put down to the dryer getting old. A laundry room that is noticeably hot and humid while the machine runs means the moisture is staying in the house instead of leaving it. A burning smell means lint is contacting the heating element and you should stop using the machine until it has been cleaned. If the outside flapper does not open when the dryer is running, the duct is effectively blocked.

Why this is a fire issue and not just an efficiency one

Dryer lint is fine, dry cellulose sitting inside a duct that carries heated air. It is close to an ideal fuel. Clothes dryer fires are a well documented cause of house fires and failure to clean the vent is the leading factor in them. That is the whole argument. It is not a dramatic risk if the vent is maintained, and it is a genuine one if it is never touched.

How we clean it

From both ends. We run a rotating brush on flexible rods the full length of the duct while a vacuum captures what comes loose, disconnect and clean the transition hose behind the machine, and clear the termination hood itself, which is often where the worst of the packing is. Then we check the airflow at the outlet so there is a measurable result rather than an assurance.

We will also tell you if the duct itself is the problem. Flexible foil or vinyl accordion hose ribs catch lint by design and should be replaced with smooth-wall rigid metal. No amount of cleaning fixes a duct that is built to collect lint, and we would rather change it than come back every year.
