Dryer Vent Cleaning for Springville Homes

A dryer only works by moving air. Once the duct stops moving air properly, everything else about the appliance stops working too, and the lint sitting in the way is flammable.

The basement laundry problem

Plenty of older Springville houses have the washer and dryer in the basement, because that is where they were put when the machines arrived and nobody has moved them since. It is a sensible place for the appliance and an awkward place for the duct. The exhaust has to travel horizontally to reach an exterior wall, then climb to get above grade, and often it does both while threaded through joists in a ceiling that was finished decades ago.

Lint does not climb. It drops out of slowing air at every elbow and settles in the horizontal sections, and in a long basement run there is a great deal of horizontal. Because the duct is buried in a finished ceiling, nobody has looked at it since the house was built.

The signs, in the order they usually appear

First, loads take longer. Then the dryer and the clothes come out unusually hot, because the heat that should have left with the moist air stayed in the drum. Then the room itself gets humid while the machine runs, which is the clearest possible evidence that the moisture is not reaching outside. Then a burning smell, or the machine cutting out mid-cycle on its own thermal limit switch. That last stage is the appliance protecting itself, and it should be treated as urgent rather than as a quirk.

How the job is done

Rotary brush on flexible rod, driven the full length of the duct, with a vacuum drawing at the same time so the material comes out rather than being packed further along. We work from both ends where the layout allows. The exterior hood is cleared and the damper flap freed, because a flap held shut by lint or by a bird screen full of debris undoes the whole job. We also replace the flexible transition behind the machine if it is the plastic or thin foil kind, since those crush behind an appliance and are a known ignition risk in their own right.

Once a year is right for most households, more often if the run is long, the household is large, or the dryer is doing daily loads.

Questions

Dryer Vents in Springville — common questions

My laundry is in the basement and the duct disappears into a finished ceiling. Can you still clean it?

In almost all cases yes, by working from the exterior hood inward and from the appliance connection outward. The exception is a duct that has collapsed or come apart inside the ceiling, and if we find that we will tell you rather than keep brushing an open cavity.

Is the vinyl hose behind my dryer a problem?

Yes, replace it. Flexible plastic and thin foil transitions crush easily, trap lint in their ridges and are not rated for the job. A rigid or semi-rigid metal transition is inexpensive and it is one of the simplest safety improvements you can make in a laundry room.

The vent goes out through the roof. Does that change anything?

It makes the run longer and adds a vertical section, which increases the resistance the dryer is working against, and it means the exterior termination needs checking from the roof rather than the yard. Roof terminations also collect debris and can be blocked by snow.

How do I know if it worked?

You will feel it at the outside hood, where the airflow should be obvious, and you will see it in the next load, which should dry in one cycle. If it does not, the problem is either further into the duct than we could reach or it is in the appliance, and we will say which.
