Sweeping Chimneys That Get Real Use in Mapleton

Mapleton sits high enough against the mountain front that the heating season runs long, and a good number of houses here burn wood as heat rather than atmosphere. That changes how fast a flue loads up.

Volume is what sets this town apart

A lot of fireplaces in Utah County get lit six or eight times a winter, on a holiday or when family visits. That is not what we tend to find in Mapleton. Sitting up on the bench under the Wasatch face, the town stays colder than the valley floor and stays colder longer, and plenty of households here put real cords through a stove or an insert rather than lighting the occasional decorative fire.

Creosote builds roughly in proportion to how much wood goes through the appliance and how cool the flue runs while it does. Heavy use is not automatically dangerous. But it does mean the once-a-year rule is a floor rather than a ceiling. If you are burning three or more cords, we would rather look at the flue partway through the season than find out what it looked like in March.

Wood quality beats brand of stove

Much of the firewood changing hands at this end of the county is cut nearby and stacked for less than a full year. Wood that still holds a quarter of its weight as water spends the first part of every burn boiling that water off instead of making heat. Flue gases leave the firebox cooler, they condense on the way up the cold side of the chimney, and the result is creosote. Two summers split, stacked off the ground and under cover will do more for your chimney than any appliance upgrade.

What the visit involves

We mask and seal the opening first, run a HEPA-filtered vacuum the entire time we are in the house, and brush from the firebox upward with rods matched to your flue size. On stoves and inserts we pull the baffle and clean the connector pipe as well, because that is usually where the worst of it sits and it is the part a rooftop-only sweep never touches. You get photographs of the liner, the smoke chamber and the crown afterward.

If the deposit has gone hard and shiny, brushing will not remove it. That is glazed creosote, it forms when a flue runs cool for long stretches, and it needs a rotary head or a chemical treatment. We will tell you that on the day rather than sweep around it and call the job finished.

When to book

Late summer and early fall, before the first cold snap. Mapleton tends to want heat earlier than the towns further out on the valley floor, and once people start lighting fires the calendar fills quickly. A sweep booked in September is routine maintenance. The same call in December is usually somebody with a room full of smoke.

Questions

Chimney Sweep in Mapleton — common questions

We put three or four cords through the stove. Should we sweep more than annually?

Very likely, yes. The annual guideline assumes moderate use, and a heavily used stove can lay down a season's worth of creosote by January. We would rather check it mid-season and find nothing than stretch the interval on a flue doing that much work.

Does a wood stove need sweeping differently than an open fireplace?

Yes. A stove or insert runs a smaller, hotter flue and the deposits concentrate in the baffle area and the connector pipe. We pull the baffle and clean the pipe as part of the job. A sweep done only from the roof will miss most of what matters on a stove.

The wood I bought was sold as seasoned. How can I tell?

Split a piece and check the fresh face with a moisture meter if you have one, or listen for a hollow knock when two pieces are struck together. Properly dry wood shows checking at the ends and feels light for its size. Anything sold as seasoned after a single summer is usually still wet inside.

Can you sweep in winter, or should I wait until spring?

We sweep year round. There is no reason to keep burning on a dirty flue until spring, and if the chimney is loaded the safest thing is to have it cleaned now rather than get three more months of use out of it.
