Chimney and Fireplace Care on the Mapleton Bench

Mapleton is a bench town. It stands above the valley floor with the mountains immediately behind it, and that position does three things to a chimney that would not happen a few miles west.

The first is temperature. Ground this high runs colder and holds its cold later into spring, so the heating season genuinely lasts longer here than it does down toward the lake. A fireplace used from October into April builds up roughly twice the deposit of one lit a dozen times over the holidays, and the once-a-year interval most homeowners assume is safe was worked out for the second case, not the first.

The second is that a real share of households here burn wood as heat rather than as atmosphere. Stoves and inserts get loaded and shut down for a slow overnight burn, and a starved fire is a cool fire. Cool exhaust condenses on the way up instead of leaving through the top, and what condenses stays.

The third is weather at the crown. Snow that would be gone from a valley chimney by afternoon can sit on one up here for a week, soaking into hairline cracks and freezing again every night. Add the air that slides down off the mountain after dark, gusting against a tall stack, and a crack that was cosmetic in October is an open joint by March.

The custom-build houses have their own list

Much of the housing went up during the custom-build decades, on larger lots and often with more than one flue under the same roof. Those chimneys have now reached the age where real problems appear, while still being young enough that nobody has ever put a camera inside one. On a house like that we would rather run a full internal inspection before sweeping anything, because until somebody has actually looked, a sweep is guesswork with a brush on the end of it.
