Dryer Vent Cleaning in Salem, Utah

Putting the laundry room upstairs was one of the best ideas in modern house design and one of the worst things that ever happened to dryer ducting.

Upstairs laundry, and the run that comes with it

Almost every larger house built in Salem over the past few decades puts the laundry on the bedroom floor, next to the clothes. It saves carrying baskets up and down stairs and everybody who has it likes it. What it also does is put the dryer as far from an exterior wall as the design allows, so the duct goes up into the attic, across it, and out through the roof, or it goes sideways through a joist bay and out a gable end.

That run is long, it has turns in it, and part of it sits in unconditioned space where the moist air cools down. Cool air carries less moisture and less lint, so both get deposited on the pipe wall. Attic sections are the worst offenders for exactly that reason, and they are the sections nobody ever thinks to check.

What a blocked run does to the machine

Modern dryers sense restriction and respond by running longer or stopping early rather than overheating. That reads to a homeowner as a failing appliance. We regularly meet brand new machines behaving precisely like the old one they replaced, because the duct was the problem and nobody looked at it.

The safety argument matters more than the laundry one. Everything packed inside that duct burns readily, and the appliance at one end of it produces sustained heat by design. What normally keeps those two facts from meeting is a moving column of air. Take the movement away and nothing is left standing between them.

Rural terminations

On lots that back onto fields and irrigated ground, the exterior hood is a small, warm, sheltered opening on the side of a building. Birds find them, and so do mice and wasps. A hood with a broken flapper, or one that has been fitted with a screen by somebody trying to solve that problem, will block completely within a season, because dryer lint blinds a screen almost immediately. The correct fix is a hood with a working damper and no mesh.

We brush the run its full length, vacuum at the appliance, check the hood opens properly under actual airflow, and tell you honestly if the route itself is the problem. Cleaning a duct that is too long, crushed, or made of foil will not keep it clean, and we would rather quote the correction than take payment for a temporary result.

Questions

Dryer Vents in Salem — common questions

Our laundry is upstairs and vents through the roof. How often does it need doing?

More often than a ground-floor run to a nearby wall. Annually is a sensible default, and sooner if you are drying every day or the machine has started leaving loads damp. The attic portion collects the most and is the least visible, which is a poor combination.

Is a screen on the outside vent a good idea to keep birds out?

No, even though it seems like one. Lint blinds a screen within weeks and the resulting blockage is worse than the birds would have been. Use a hood with a proper hinged damper that closes when the dryer is off. It keeps wildlife out and does not choke the airflow.

How can I tell if the problem is the vent or the dryer?

Pull the machine out, disconnect the duct, and run the dryer on air for a minute. If it blows strongly at the back of the machine, the appliance is fine and the duct is the restriction. It is a two-minute test and it saves people from buying dryers they did not need.

We only run the dryer a few times a week. Is this still worth doing?

Lower use means longer intervals, not no intervals. What accumulates regardless of use is anything that gets in from outside, and moisture in a long run in an unheated attic causes lint to stick even when there is not much of it. Every few years is reasonable at low use.
