Capping and Waterproofing Mapleton Chimneys

Wind is the reason this matters more here

Mapleton sits directly below the Wasatch face, and towns in that position get drainage wind: cold, dense air spilling down out of the canyons after dark and running out across the bench. It is a nightly pattern for much of the cold season, not an occasional storm event. For a chimney, drainage wind does two things. It drives snow horizontally into an open flue, where it melts against warm masonry and soaks into the chimney from the inside. And it can create a downdraft across a poorly terminated flue, pushing air and smoke back into the room.

A properly sized cap addresses both. The lid keeps precipitation out of the flue entirely, and the height and shape of the cap above the crown help the wind pass over the opening rather than into it. On chimneys that sit low relative to a roof ridge or a nearby slope, a taller cap or a wind-directional cap is sometimes the difference between a fireplace that works and one that backs up on windy nights.

Animals, and why a screen is not optional

Open ground and foothill vegetation come right up to the edge of this town, which means the wildlife pressure on a warm, sheltered vertical shaft is real. Birds nest in flues in spring, and a nest is both a blockage and a fire load sitting directly above the firebox. Raccoons will use a chimney as a den. Squirrels get in and cannot always get out. A capped flue with a stainless mesh screen ends that category of problem permanently, and it costs far less than the removal call does.

Top-sealing dampers do more than a throat damper

The cast iron damper in the throat of an older fireplace was never meant to seal. It warps, it rusts, and even in good condition it leaks heavily. A top-sealing damper mounts at the top of the flue with a silicone gasket and closes the chimney at the roofline instead. That keeps conditioned air in the house, keeps the flue column warmer between fires so the fireplace drafts more readily when you light it, and stops the cold-air waterfall that makes a room next to a fireplace feel drafty all winter.

Waterproofing is not sealing

Masonry needs to breathe. A film-forming sealer traps water vapor inside the brick, and at bench elevation where freeze-thaw cycling is severe, trapped water is exactly what destroys masonry. The correct product is a vapor-permeable siloxane repellent that sheds liquid water off the face while letting vapor escape. Applied to sound masonry it materially extends the life of the chimney. Applied over spalled brick or a broken crown it hides a problem rather than solving one, so we repair first and waterproof after.
