Orchard wood, and why it cuts both ways

Fruitwood is everywhere in this part of south Utah County, because orchards have to be pruned and somebody has to take the wood away. Apple and cherry burn beautifully once they are properly dry, and they are among the better firewoods anyone around here can get for free. The trouble is the word properly. Fruitwood comes off the tree wet, it is dense, and it wants a full year stacked and covered before it belongs in a firebox.

Burn it green and the fire spends its energy boiling water instead of making heat. The flue gas leaves cool, condenses on the way up, and lays down creosote at a rate that a dry load never would. We can generally tell from the deposit pattern whether a household has been burning last spring's prunings, and the honest fix is a woodpile management conversation rather than a more frequent sweep.

The second flue nobody mentions on the phone

A large share of Salem properties have more than one thing burning. There is the fireplace in the house, and then there is a stove in the shop, the barn, or the finished basement, running a stovepipe out through a wall. Shop stoves get fed whatever is lying around, they run hot and then get shut down to smolder overnight, and they are almost never swept because nobody thinks of them as a chimney.

Elevation lengthens the season

Salem sits higher than the middle of the valley, and the ground on the hills above town holds cold longer at both ends of winter. In practice households here light the first fire earlier in the fall and the last one later in the spring than people down near the lake do. That is more burn hours per year on the same flue, which is a straightforward argument for an annual sweep rather than a sweep every other year.

The visit itself is contained: the opening gets sealed, filtration runs from start to finish, and the flue is brushed from the firebox upward. Photographs come with the job, covering the crown, the liner and the smoke chamber, because a condition report you can look at yourself is worth more than a verbal summary. Where a deposit has hardened into a glaze, brushing achieves nothing, and we would rather explain that and price the treatment properly than invoice you for an hour that changed the flue not at all.
