Chimney Cleaning for the Wood Burners of South Jordan
South Jordan is not a heavy wood-burning city. Most of the newer housing was built with sealed gas appliances instead. That is exactly why the wood fireplaces that do exist here are so often overdue.
An occasional-use fireplace is not a low-risk fireplace
The pattern we see across South Jordan is a household that lights maybe a dozen fires a year, mostly around the holidays, and reasonably concludes that a chimney used that lightly cannot need much. The reasoning is wrong in one specific way. Mostly the subdivisions built through the seventies, eighties and nineties, before direct-vent gas became the builder default. Some are true masonry chimneys. A great many more are factory-built metal fireplaces inside a framed chase, which look like masonry from the street because of the brick or stone veneer wrapped around the outside, but are a completely different system inside. They are swept differently, they wear differently, and the metal parts have a service life that brick does not.
What the visit includes
The opening gets masked and a HEPA-filtered vacuum runs at the firebox throughout, so nothing reaches the room. We brush the flue, clear the smoke shelf, and check the damper actually seats. On a factory-built unit we also look at the refractory panels and the condition of the metal chimney sections, since those are the parts that fail first and the parts a purely masonry-minded sweep tends to skip. You get photographs at the end either way, because the point of the visit is that you know the condition of the system, not that somebody says it is fine.

How do I tell whether ours is masonry or a factory-built unit?
Look inside the firebox. Real masonry is brick or firebrick with visible mortar joints. A factory-built unit has smooth refractory panels and usually a metal strip or label inside the opening. There is often a data plate with the model number, which is worth photographing before you call anyone.
Our house was built in the last twenty years and the fireplace is gas. Does anything need sweeping?
Not sweeping in the wood sense, but the vent still needs inspecting and the appliance still needs servicing. Direct-vent gas fireplaces have sealed venting that can be blocked by nests or debris at the outside terminal, and that is a genuine safety item rather than a housekeeping one.
Can you sweep a chimney that has not been used in years?
Yes, and those are the ones most worth doing before you light it. An unused flue can hold a nest, a fallen brick, or a liner that has deteriorated quietly. We inspect first, then clean, so nobody discovers a blockage the hard way on Christmas Eve.
