Repairing the Builder-Installed Fireplaces of South Jordan

There is a stage in a house's life when the fireplace that came with it starts asking for attention. In much of South Jordan, a lot of homes are arriving at that stage at roughly the same time.

The parts that go first, roughly in order

Remote receivers and wall control modules fail early, and they fail in a way that looks like a dead fireplace. Batteries in the handset and, on many units, in the receiver box behind the lower louver, account for a surprising share of the calls we take. After that come the gaskets: the rope seal around the glass front hardens, the seal breaks, and a direct-vent unit that depends on being airtight starts behaving unpredictably. Then blower bearings, which announce themselves with a rattle or a whine long before they seize. Valves and pilot assemblies are further down the list but they are the ones that end a fireplace's life if parts have gone out of production.

Dead unit, or dead battery

Before calling anyone, it is worth checking two things. Replace the batteries in the remote and in the receiver, and confirm the wall switch or any accessory switch behind the louver has not been knocked. We are called out for both regularly and we would rather you did not pay us to change a battery. If the pilot is lit and the burner still will not come on, that is a real fault and worth a visit.

Why glass and gasket condition matters more than it looks

A direct-vent fireplace draws its combustion air from outside through the outer wall of a coaxial pipe and exhausts through the inner one. The whole arrangement only works because the firebox is sealed. Once the glass gasket has hardened or the glass has been refitted without its clips seated properly, room air leaks in, combustion goes off, and you get soot on the glass, a smell, and sometimes nuisance shutdowns. It is also the reason a cracked glass front is not a cosmetic problem and the unit should not be run until it is replaced with the correct tempered or ceramic panel for that model.

Parts availability, said honestly

Fireplaces installed in the building boom of the last few decades are now old enough that some manufacturers have discontinued components, and a few of those manufacturers no longer exist. We will look up your model and tell you plainly whether it is supportable. When it is not, replacing the insert is the honest recommendation, and we would rather give it than fit an unlisted substitute part into a sealed combustion appliance.

Questions

Fireplace Repair in South Jordan — common questions

Our fireplace worked last winter and now does nothing at all. What should we check first?

Batteries in the remote handset and in the receiver module, which is usually behind the lower grille, plus any switch hidden behind that same grille. That combination accounts for a good share of dead fireplaces. If the pilot is out and will not relight, stop there and call us.

The glass has a crack in one corner. Can we still use it?

No. The glass front is part of the sealed combustion enclosure, not a decorative screen, and a cracked panel breaks the seal that keeps exhaust out of the room. It also tends to fail further with heat. It needs the correct replacement panel for that specific model.

How do I find the model number?

There is a metal data plate, usually behind the lower louver, sometimes on the inside of the firebox opening or on the side of the firebox. Photograph the whole plate rather than just the name. Model and serial together determine which parts fit and whether they are still made.

Is it worth repairing a twenty-year-old gas fireplace?

It depends entirely on which part failed and whether the manufacturer still supports it. A blower or a thermopile on a supported model is worth doing. A discontinued valve assembly on a brand that no longer exists usually is not, and we will tell you which situation you are in before you spend anything.
