Sweeping Both Kinds of Riverton Chimney

Most Riverton chimneys are not masonry. They are metal systems inside a framed and sided chase, and sweeping one properly is a different job from sweeping brick.

Drive around this end of the valley and you can pick the chimneys out by shape. The subdivision homes have square, sided boxes rising past the roof, and inside each one is a factory-built firebox connected to a listed metal chimney. The older farm properties scattered among them have brick stacks or stove pipe, and a good number of those still burn wood as a genuine heat source.

Why a factory-built system is swept differently

A metal chimney is not a brick flue with steel in it. The interior is stainless or aluminized, the joints are twist-locked sections, and there are usually air channels between concentric walls that must not be disturbed. Wire brushes sized and used for clay tile will score the liner and can distort the seams, and a scored liner corrodes.

So these get poly brushes matched to the exact diameter, worked at a speed that removes deposit without polishing the metal, and a careful look at every joint. Inside the firebox, the refractory panels are cast material that chips if you lever tools against them, and the smoke dome above the panels is thin steel. It is all cleanable, but not with the same kit that a masonry chimney needs.

The stove-heated houses

Where a Riverton property is genuinely heated with wood, the flue is loaded much more heavily than a subdivision fireplace that gets lit at Christmas. Those need the connector pipe pulled or accessed at the tee, the horizontal sections cleaned properly, and often more than one visit across a hard winter. We would rather book a mid-season sweep than find a glazed flue in March.

What happens on the day

The opening or stove door is sealed, a HEPA vacuum runs continuously, and nothing gets touched until the room is protected. Afterwards you get photographs of the flue interior and, on a factory-built system, of the model plate and the joints, because that plate is the document everything else about your appliance depends on.

When it is worth doing

Annually for anyone who burns as a heat source. For the subdivision fireplace that sees a dozen fires a winter, an annual inspection with a sweep as needed is usually the sensible arrangement, and we will tell you honestly when a flue does not need cleaning yet.

Questions

Chimney Sweep in Riverton — common questions

Our fireplace is a metal one in a sided chase. Does it still need sweeping?

Yes, if you burn wood in it. Creosote forms in a metal flue the same way it does in a brick one. What changes is the method, since the liner has to be cleaned with brushes matched to it rather than the stiff wire used on clay tile.

We only light the fireplace a few times a year. Is annual sweeping overkill?

Often, and we will say so. What is not optional is an annual look, because birds, wind damage and a corroding cap do not depend on how often you burn. We inspect first and sweep when there is something to remove.

Can I sweep a factory-built chimney myself?

You can damage one easily, which is the honest answer. The liner is thin, the sections are joined rather than mortared, and the air channels in the pipe assembly matter to how it is rated. If you do it yourself, use a poly brush of exactly the right diameter and stay off the panels.
