Upstairs Laundry and Roof Vents in Riverton
Putting the laundry room upstairs next to the bedrooms is convenient and it is standard in the floor plans built across this city. It also produces the worst dryer duct layout there is.
When the dryer sits on an upper floor, the exhaust has to travel up through the framing and out at the roof, or across the attic to a gable. Either way the run is long, it climbs, and it usually includes several elbows. Every one of those factors reduces airflow, and reduced airflow is what causes lint to settle in a duct rather than leave it.
Why upward runs clog first
Lint stays airborne only while the air is moving fast enough to carry it. A vertical run is fighting gravity for the whole climb, so the first place velocity drops is where deposits start. Then the deposit narrows the pipe, which slows the air further, which deposits more lint. It compounds, and by the time drying times have doubled there is often a substantial plug near the top or at the last elbow.
Roof terminations
A roof vent is out of sight and out of mind. Two things go wrong with them. Birds nest in them, which is a spring problem in this area and blocks the run completely. And some roof caps come fitted with a screen, which is correct for a bathroom fan and wrong for a dryer, because lint mats onto the mesh within weeks. If your termination has a screen in it, that alone can explain the whole problem.
Riverton did most of its building in one long run from the mid-nineties onward, so a great many of these roof terminations are now twenty-odd years old and have never once been taken apart. That is more than long enough for the last two feet of the run to have packed solid.
What we do
The dryer is pulled out and disconnected at the appliance, and the run is cleaned along its full length with rotating brushes on flexible rods while a vacuum holds the debris. On a roof-terminated run we clear the cap from above as well, because the last two feet are where the compacted material usually sits. Airflow gets checked before we leave, so there is a result rather than an assurance.
Ductwork worth changing
Flexible foil hose behind the machine crushes when the dryer is pushed back and it holds lint in its ridges. Sheet metal screws at joints catch lint on every load. Both are quick to correct while the machine is out, and both make the difference between a duct that stays clean for a year and one that does not.

Once a year for a family running the dryer most days. That layout is the most restrictive common configuration, so it accumulates faster than a short ground-floor run and it has the least margin before airflow becomes a problem.
There is a mesh screen in our roof vent. Should there be?
No. Screens belong on bathroom and kitchen terminations, not on a dryer exhaust, because lint mats onto the mesh and blocks it quickly. We replace a screened cap with a proper dryer termination that has a free-swinging damper instead.
Can the duct be cleaned without moving the dryer?
Not properly. The heaviest lint is usually in the first few feet behind the machine and at the connection itself, so we pull the appliance out, clean from that end and reconnect it with foil tape rather than screws. It also gives us a chance to see the transition hose, which is often the actual fault.
How long should a load take to dry?
For a normal load, roughly forty-five minutes to an hour is typical. If yours needs two cycles, or the clothes are still warm and damp at the end, the exhaust is restricted. That symptom is the most reliable early warning you will get, and it shows up long before anything looks wrong.
