Dryer Vent Cleaning for Holladay Homes
Duct length is the variable that decides how dangerous a dryer vent becomes, and Holladay houses tend to have more of it than the average.
A dryer moves a fixed volume of air. Every foot of duct and every elbow it has to push through costs some of that airflow, and when airflow drops, moist lint stops making it outside and starts settling on the duct wall instead. The deposit narrows the pipe, which cuts airflow further, which lays down more lint. It is a loop that ends either in a dryer that takes three cycles to dry a load or, less often but far worse, in a lint fire in the wall.
Why the runs here are long
Two local patterns produce them. The first is simply house size: a laundry room in the middle of a large plan can be twenty-five or thirty feet of duct from the nearest exterior wall, often with several turns. The second is renovation. Holladay has had an enormous amount of remodeling, and one of the most popular moves is relocating laundry from the basement up to the bedroom level. That is a real improvement to live with, and it almost always means a long duct through a joist bay and out through the roof. Rooftop terminations are the hardest to inspect, the easiest to forget, and the ones we most often find capped by a flapper stuck open on a wad of lint or blocked by a bird's nest.
What we find behind the machine
The other half of the problem is the last four feet. Flexible foil or vinyl transition hose crushed behind the dryer will strangle an otherwise perfect duct run. Rigid or semi-rigid metal, cut to the right length and not folded up like an accordion, is a small change that recovers real airflow. We check that connection every time, because cleaning thirty feet of good duct and leaving a crushed hose at the end accomplishes nothing.
How the job runs
Rotary brush from the termination inward with a vacuum on the other end, so the lint leaves the building rather than being pushed into the house. Airflow is measured after, the termination flap is confirmed to open and close freely, and if the duct material itself is unsafe we tell you rather than cleaning it and pretending.
Questions
Dryer Vents in Holladay — common questions
How do I know my Holladay dryer vent needs cleaning?
The reliable signs are loads that take noticeably longer than they used to, a hot laundry room, and a burnt smell during a cycle. A vent hood outside that does not blow strongly when the dryer is running is the simplest test of all.
Our laundry moved upstairs in the remodel. Does that matter?
It matters a lot. Upstairs laundry usually vents through the roof, which means a longer run, more elbows and a termination nobody ever looks at. Those runs need cleaning more often than a short basement vent, not less.
Can I just clean it with a shop vac?
You can clear the first few feet, and that is worth doing. It will not reach a thirty foot run with turns in it, and the section nearest the termination is usually the worst. A rotary brush on rods is what actually clears the far end.
How often should a long Holladay duct run be cleared?
Annually for a typical family, and more often for a long roof-terminated run or a household doing laundry every day. If you have pets, plan on the shorter interval; pet hair loads a vent considerably faster.
