Intermittent ignition, and why it strands people

Because Saratoga Springs was built almost entirely after 2000, the fireplace in a house here is far more likely to be a sealed unit with electronic ignition than the standing-pilot box an older town would hand you. Older gas fireplaces kept a small pilot burning permanently and used the heat from it to hold the gas valve open. Newer units mostly use intermittent pilot ignition instead: nothing burns until you call for heat, then a module sparks a pilot, proves the flame, and opens the valve. It is more efficient and it is a genuine improvement.

It also means the appliance depends on electronics and on power. When one of these units will not light, the cause is usually the ignition module, the spark electrode being dirty or out of position, the flame sense circuit failing to prove, or simply the battery backup pack that nobody knew existed. We have opened a great many perfectly healthy fireplaces in this city and found four dead alkaline batteries in a holder under the firebox.

Remotes and receivers

Nearly every unit here is operated by a handset or a wall control talking to a receiver. Pairing is lost, receivers fail, wall switches corrode at the terminals, and thermostatic controls get set to a temperature the room already exceeds so the fireplace correctly refuses to run. Before anything is replaced we work out whether the appliance was ever being asked to light, because a surprising share of no-heat calls are a control that never sent the signal.

Tight houses and safety shutdowns

Modern construction here is well sealed, which is good for heating bills and makes direct-vent the right choice, since those units take combustion air from outside and never compete with the house. What still causes trouble is the termination. On exposed lots facing open ground the wind pressure on a sidewall terminal is significant, and snow, landscaping and fencing all end up too close to it. The unit responds by shutting down, which is correct behavior, and the repair is outside.

The mechanical faults that remain

Glass gaskets that have hardened and no longer seal. Blowers with dry bearings. Log sets shifted out of position so flame impinges where it should not, which sooties the glass and eventually damages the burner. Those are ordinary wear, and on builder-installed units that have never been serviced they tend to arrive together.

We diagnose before quoting. Replacing an ignition module because a fireplace would not light, when the fault was a dirty electrode, is an expensive way to be wrong.
