When a Spanish Fork Fireplace Stops Behaving
Three complaints account for most of the fireplace calls we take in Spanish Fork, and only one of them is usually a broken fireplace.
It smokes into the room
Nine times out of ten the appliance is fine and the house is the problem. Modern homes are sealed tightly, and a range hood, a bathroom fan or a running dryer can pull enough air out that the flue becomes the easiest place for replacement air to come back in. The fire then vents backwards. Cracking a window on the same side of the house as the fireplace is a free diagnostic: if the smoking stops, you have a pressure problem, not a chimney problem.
It dies on windy nights
This one is close to a local speciality. Sustained wind coming down out of the canyon does not just blow across a chimney top, it pushes down into it, and a gust that reverses flow will put out a pilot or backpuff a wood fire into the room. Sometimes the fix is a wind-resistant cap. Sometimes the flue simply does not terminate high enough above the roofline to escape the turbulent air rolling over the ridge. Those are different repairs and it is worth knowing which one you have before spending anything.
It will not light at all
On a gas unit that usually comes down to a thermopile that no longer generates enough millivolts, a dirty pilot orifice, a failed igniter or a gas valve at the end of its life. All four look identical from the sofa. A meter tells them apart in a few minutes, and the parts differ enough in cost that guessing is expensive.
The heat has gone out of it
Gas logs collapse and get pushed out of position. Direct-vent glass fogs with a white film that no household cleaner will shift. Blowers seize. None of that is dangerous, all of it makes a fireplace feel tired, and most of it is a service visit rather than a replacement.
What we do first
We diagnose before we quote. If the answer is that your fireplace works and your house is starved of makeup air, we will tell you that and charge you for the visit rather than sell you a part that would not have helped.
Questions
Fireplace Repair in Spanish Fork — common questions
Why does my fireplace only smoke when the furnace is running?
Because both are competing for the same air. A furnace, a dryer and a kitchen fan all pull air out of the house, and if the building is tight the chimney becomes the intake. It is a house pressure issue and it is fixable, usually with a dedicated makeup air path.
The pilot keeps blowing out when it is gusty. Is that dangerous?
Not immediately, because the safety valve shuts the gas off when the pilot fails. It is a nuisance and a sign that the termination is exposed. A wind-resistant cap or a change in termination height usually solves it.
Is it worth repairing a fireplace from the 1990s?
Often yes. Valves, thermopiles, igniters and blowers are all replaceable, and a sound firebox has decades left. We would only push you toward replacement if the firebox itself or the venting has failed, or if parts for that model genuinely no longer exist.
Can you work on a wood fireplace as well as gas?
Yes. Wood repairs tend to be firebrick, damper and smoke chamber work rather than components, and a lot of wood-burning complaints in Spanish Fork turn out to be draft problems rather than damaged parts.
