Water gets in long before fire does any harm

Nearly every masonry failure we document on this bench begins as water. Snow lingers up here longer than it does lower down, and a crown or a north-facing wall that stays damp through a run of cold nights goes through freeze and thaw over and over. Water expands as it turns to ice, so each cycle opens a joint slightly wider than the last one left it. Give that a few winters and the mortar is gone to a depth you can feel with a fingertip, and once water is travelling inside the stack it goes to work on the liner and the smoke chamber where nobody can see it happening.

Canyon air is the second factor. Cold air drains downslope after dark and settles against houses near the mouth, and a chimney that pulls perfectly well on a still afternoon can stall or reverse underneath it. If your fire behaves all evening and the room smells of old smoke by morning, that is usually the explanation rather than a blockage.

The third is how people burn. A stove or an insert damped down to run slow overnight produces exactly the cool, smoky conditions that lay creosote down fastest, and those appliances frequently vent into a flue that was originally sized for an open fireplace. An oversized flue cools the smoke on its way up, which makes the deposit worse again. It is the single most common thing we find on a first visit here, and the answer is a correctly sized liner rather than sweeping the same chimney three times a season.

Heavy tree cover adds a small nuisance with real consequences. Needles and leaves collect against a cap screen, the screen chokes, and the appliance starts spilling into the room. Clearing it takes minutes and it is worth a look every autumn.
