The Cheap Parts That Protect a Millcreek Chimney
The cheapest parts of a chimney are the ones that decide whether the expensive parts survive. A cap, a crown and a damper are the whole defense.
Three separate jobs people get mixed up
A cap sits above the flue and keeps rain, snow and animals out of the opening while letting exhaust past. A crown is the concrete slab across the top of the masonry that sheds water off the brick. A damper seals the flue when nothing is burning. They fail independently and they are not substitutes for each other, which is worth knowing before someone quotes you one and calls the problem solved.
Millcreek gets wildlife and wind
Homes along the canyon corridor sit on an animal highway. Birds nest in open flues in spring, and a nest is both a blockage and a fire load sitting directly above a firebox. A stainless mesh cap ends that permanently and is one of the few genuinely one-and-done repairs on a chimney.
Wind is the other half. Downslope air off the mountains hits bench stacks hard, and on an exposed chimney it can push down the flue and reverse a marginal draft. There are cap designs specifically shaped to break that pressure, and on the right chimney they solve a smoking fireplace that no amount of firebox work would have touched.
Waterproofing has to breathe
Brick is porous by design and it needs to dry outward. Seal it with a film-forming product and the moisture already inside has nowhere to go, so it freezes behind the coating and takes the brick face with it. That is how a well-meant waterproofing job accelerates the damage it was bought to prevent. The right material is a vapor-permeable siloxane sealer that stops liquid water entering while still letting vapor out.
Sealing also has to come after the repairs, not instead of them. Coating over open joints and a cracked crown just locks water into the wall.
Top-sealing dampers
The throat damper in a mid-century fireplace is a cast plate on a warped frame, and after decades it does not seal against anything. A top-mounted damper with a silicone gasket closes at the top of the flue instead, which stops the heated air leaving the house all winter and keeps the whole flue dry in summer. On chimneys that smell in July, it is usually the fix.

Do we need a cap if we never burn anything?
More than if you did. An unused flue is exactly what birds and squirrels look for, and an open top lets rain and snow melt straight into the masonry all year. A cap on an idle chimney is protecting the structure, not the fire.
Will a cap stop the downdraft into our living room?
It can, if the downdraft is caused by wind rather than by house pressure. Wind-directional and pressure-breaking cap designs handle the first case well. If the fireplace also spills smoke on still evenings, the problem is inside the house and a cap will not resolve it.
Is waterproofing our brick chimney a good idea?
Yes, with the right product and in the right order. Use a breathable siloxane repellent after the joints and the crown have been repaired. Avoid anything that forms a surface film, because trapping moisture inside brick in a freeze-thaw climate does real damage.
Our chimney smells musty in summer. Why in the warm months?
Warm humid air meeting creosote-soaked masonry releases the odor, and in summer the house often pulls air down the flue instead of up it. Sweeping removes the source and a top-sealing damper cuts off the path, which together usually ends it.
