Sweeping Hard-Working Chimneys in Fairfield

There is a difference between a fireplace that gets lit at Christmas and a stove that carries a house through a Cedar Valley winter. Fairfield mostly has the second kind.

When wood is doing real work rather than providing atmosphere, the sums change. A household burning several cords between October and April is running its flue for thousands of hours, and every one of those hours deposits something. That is not a problem in itself. It is only a problem when the interval between sweeps is set by habit rather than by what is actually inside the pipe.

The other thing about heating this way is that nobody notices gradual decline. A flue narrowing under deposit draws slightly worse each week, so the stove needs a little more air, then a little more, and the household adjusts without ever registering that anything changed. By the time smoke rolls out when the door opens, the restriction has been building for a season or two.

What we usually find out here

Three things, mostly. The first is deposit concentrated in the connector pipe rather than up the chimney, because the pipe between the stove and the flue runs cooler and often has a horizontal section where flue gas slows down and drops its load. People sweep the chimney and leave the pipe, and the pipe was where the trouble was.

The second is glaze. Overnight burns are standard practice in a house that genuinely relies on the stove, and damping a full firebox right down is what turns loose soot into hard, shiny tar. A brush will not touch that. It needs a rotary head or a chemical treatment, and we will say so rather than sweep past it and hand you a clean bill.

The third is the shop or outbuilding stove nobody mentions on the phone. Plenty of properties out here have one in a garage, barn or workshop, and those are usually the least maintained appliances on the place. If yours has one, tell us when you book. We would rather do both while the truck is on site than come back.

Wood, and getting it dry in this climate

Cedar Valley air is dry, which is a real advantage for seasoning firewood, and the wind helps too. What defeats people is stacking. Wood covered on top and open at the sides dries well here; wood under a tarp wrapped down to the ground stays wet no matter how long it sits, because the moisture leaving the bottom of the pile has nowhere to go. Split it, stack it off the dirt, cover only the top, and give it the summer. Dry wood is the cheapest chimney maintenance there is, and it does more for your flue than anything we sell.

Questions

Chimney Sweep in Fairfield — common questions

The stove carries this house from October through to April. What interval does that need?

Plan on before every burn season at minimum, and have it looked at midwinter if you burn overnight. What actually decides it is the thickness of deposit in the flue, so we photograph it and show you rather than working from a calendar.

Do you clean the stove pipe as well as the chimney?

Yes, and it matters more than people think. The connector pipe runs cooler than the flue above it, so deposit concentrates there, especially in any horizontal section. A chimney swept without the pipe is a job half done.

Will you come out this far for one stove?

Yes. Fairfield is a long way from anywhere and we plan routes accordingly. If you have more than one appliance on the property, or a neighbor wanting the same visit, mention it when you book and we will schedule it together.

Can you sweep a stove in a shop or barn?

We do it regularly. Outbuilding stoves are often the hardest worked and least maintained appliances on a rural property, and they frequently have improvised connector pipe and wall pass-throughs that are worth a proper look.
