Dryer Vent Cleaning for Fairfield Properties
On a rural lot the dryer vent has two problems instead of one. Lint builds up from the inside, and the outside end is a small sheltered opening in a landscape with very few of them.
Most advice about dryer vents assumes a suburban house with a short run through a wall. Out here the situation is usually different enough to be worth describing on its own terms.
The outside hood, on open ground
A dryer vent hood is a covered opening about four inches across, warm when the dryer is running, sheltered from wind, and mounted on a wall. In a landscape of open pasture and sagebrush with few trees and few outbuildings, that is prime real estate. Birds prise the flapper open and nest in it, and once there is nesting material in the hood the flapper cannot close, which brings in more debris and lets cold air straight into the laundry. Mice and insects use them too. If your dryer suddenly got worse rather than gradually worse, look at the hood first, because a nest is an abrupt change where lint is a slow one.
The wind adds its own contribution. Fine grit and seed heads blow into the hood and mix with damp lint into something considerably more solid than lint alone. It does not vacuum out. It has to be brushed out, and the hood usually needs taking off to do it properly.
Long runs in older and larger houses
Rural houses tend to be spread out, and the laundry is often in a basement, a back room or a mud room rather than on an outside wall. That means a long duct with several turns, and every turn costs airflow. Add a duct made of flexible foil hose, which is what most retrofits use, and the corrugations catch lint at every ridge. We find crushed and sagging foil runs regularly, sometimes with a low spot holding water where condensation has collected. Rigid smooth-wall metal duct, joined with foil tape rather than screws, is what should be in a concealed run. Screws point into the airflow and snag lint on purpose.
What the cleaning involves and how you know it worked
We disconnect at the appliance, drive a rotary brush the full length of the duct on flexible rods with a vacuum capturing the debris, then go outside, remove the hood, clear it out and check the flapper actually moves freely. Then we measure airflow so the result is a number. If the duct material or the routing is the real problem, we will tell you that rather than cleaning it again next year and taking your money twice.
The reason to bother is simple. A restricted vent makes the dryer run longer and hotter with a mass of dry fiber packed inside it. Licensed and insured, and we will tell you if what you actually need is a new duct rather than a clean one.
Questions
Dryer Vents in Fairfield — common questions
Birds have got into the vent hood on the outside wall. Can you deal with that?
Yes, and it is a frequent call in this valley because a warm sheltered opening is scarce on open ground. We take the hood off to get the material out completely rather than pushing it back down the duct, then check the flapper swings freely before we refit it.
Our dryer got much worse very suddenly. What does that suggest?
A sudden change usually means an obstruction rather than accumulated lint, which builds slowly. A nest in the hood, a crushed section of flexible duct, or a flapper jammed shut are the usual culprits. Start at the outside end.
The laundry is a long way from an outside wall. Is that a problem?
It makes the vent work harder, and it means the duct matters more. Long runs with several bends can only work if the duct is smooth-wall rigid metal properly sized. If yours is flexible foil hose, that is worth changing rather than just cleaning.
Can you do the house and an outbuilding on the same visit?
Yes, and we would prefer to. Fairfield is a long drive from most of our other work, so if there is more than one appliance on the property, tell us when you book and we will allow the time.
