Start by counting the flues

The first thing we do on a house up here is work out what is actually venting where. Large homes on the bench were commonly built with several appliances and the owners rarely inherit a map of them. It is normal to find a flue nobody has looked inside since the house was framed, usually the basement one, and that is the one worth opening up.

Not every flue needs a sweep. A sealed direct-vent gas fireplace does not accumulate creosote and does not get brushed. It gets its burner, glass gasket and vent termination checked instead. What we will not do is charge you to sweep four flues when one of them burns wood.

Altitude changes how a fire behaves

Highland sits several hundred feet above the valley floor, and thinner air matters more than people expect. There is less oxygen in each cubic foot drawn through the fire, so a combustion setup that runs clean lower down can run slightly rich here, and rich means more unburnt material heading up a cold liner. The same thinner air also gives you marginally less draft pressure for the same chimney height. Neither effect is dramatic on its own. Together they are enough that a fireplace on the bench tends to want a little more air and a slightly hotter fire than the same fireplace would in a valley-floor house.

The once-a-year fireplace still needs the visit

The most common thing we hear here is that the wood fireplace only gets lit a few times a winter, so it must be clean. Light use does reduce creosote, and it does nothing at all about the other reasons a flue fails. Water gets in, mortar joints open, birds nest, a chase cover rusts, a damper seizes. A once-a-year appliance is exactly the one nobody notices going wrong.
