Fireplace and Stove Repair in Charleston

Charleston is pasture and farm ground with houses spread out along it, plenty of them on propane and their own water, and in a valley this cold a fireplace that has stopped working properly is not a project for next month. It is often the backup heat for the house when the line out here goes down.

Book Fireplace Repair Call (801) 555-0360

We treat repair calls out here with that in mind. The diagnosis still comes before the quote, but we know the difference between an appliance somebody lights at Thanksgiving and one that is carrying part of the heating load in January.

Door gaskets, and the airtight stove that stopped being airtight

A modern wood stove controls its burn by controlling air. The fiberglass rope gasket around the door is what makes that control possible, and it compresses and hardens over years until the door no longer seals. The symptoms are a stove that burns through a load far too quickly, that will not hold overnight, and that you cannot damp down. People read this as the stove wearing out. It is usually a gasket and a latch adjustment, and it is a cheap fix with a large effect.

Baffles and firebrick

Inside a stove, the baffle plate above the fire keeps hot gases in the firebox long enough to burn properly. Baffles warp and burn through, particularly on stoves that have been over-fired. When the baffle goes, efficiency drops, the flue runs hotter than it should, and the top of the stove takes heat it was not designed for. The firebrick lining is a similar wear item and similarly replaceable.

Catalytic combustors

If your stove has a catalytic combustor, it has a service life measured in seasons, not decades, and it degrades gradually. A tired catalyst shows up as smoke from the chimney that used to be invisible and heat output that has quietly declined. It is a replaceable component, and it is worth checking rather than assuming the whole appliance has aged.

Masonry fireplaces and draft in cold weather

Open fireplaces in cold-valley houses sometimes refuse to start cleanly in deep winter. The mechanism is usually a cold column of dense air sitting in the flue that the fire cannot displace. Warming the flue first with a rolled newspaper torch at the damper, or fitting a top-sealing damper so the flue stays warmer between fires, generally solves what looks like a serious draft fault. We check the obvious causes before recommending anything structural, and we are licensed and insured for the work that follows.

Questions

Fireplace Repair in Charleston — common questions

The stove used to stay in overnight and now it does not.

Check the door gasket first. If a folded dollar bill closed in the door pulls out with no resistance, the gasket is no longer sealing and the stove is drawing uncontrolled air. Replacing it is inexpensive and usually restores the burn time completely.

The fireplace pushes smoke into the room when we first light it.

That is normally a cold flue rather than a fault. Dense cold air sits in the chimney and the fire cannot lift it until the flue warms. Priming the flue with a lit roll of paper held up at the damper for a minute before lighting usually clears it.

How urgent is a cracked baffle?

Reasonably urgent. A failed baffle sends flame and unburned gas straight into the flue, which raises flue temperatures and increases the chance of a chimney fire. It also costs you heat. It is a replaceable part, not a reason to replace the stove.

Can you work on stoves as well as fireplaces?

Yes. Gaskets, baffles, firebrick, glass and connector pipe are all routine, and so is checking the install itself. On rural properties the stove is often the appliance that matters most, so it gets the same attention as a masonry fireplace.
