Diagnosing a Heber City Fireplace That Will Not Behave

Most fireplace repair calls in Heber City are one of four complaints. It smokes when you light it. It will not catch at all. It drafts backwards and fills the house with cold air and an old-fire smell. Or something inside it is visibly broken.

Smoke is not pushed up a flue. It relies on the house pushing air in. Every cubic foot going up the flue has to be replaced by a cubic foot coming in somewhere else, and that is where a lot of the newer construction around Heber runs into trouble. Houses built to current energy standards are genuinely airtight. Add a range hood, a couple of bath fans, or a basement furnace pulling combustion air, and the house goes to negative pressure. The path of least resistance for makeup air becomes the chimney, running backwards.

You can usually confirm it in a minute: crack a window on the windward side and see whether the smoke behaves. If it does, the flue is not the problem and relining it would be an expensive way to fix nothing. The answer is a dedicated outside air supply, and sometimes just a habit change about which fans run when.

The cold-flue version of the same problem

The other cause is thermal, and it is specific to cold places. A tall exterior chimney full of dense, freezing air is a column heavier than the air in your living room. Until you heat it, it wants to fall down the flue, not rise. Light a fire into that and the first minutes go into the room. Warming the flue first with a rolled paper torch held up near the damper usually settles it, and if that consistently works, you have your answer.

Damper condition and whether it fully opens, since warped and rusted dampers are common on older stacks here. Firebox panels and refractory mortar joints, which crack from heat cycling and are a safety issue rather than a cosmetic one. Flue sizing against the fireplace opening, because an oversized opening on an undersized flue will smoke no matter what else is right. Blockage, whether that is a nest, a fallen tile or a crushed cap. And on gas units, the pilot assembly, thermopile output and venting.
