Getting a Bluffdale Fireplace Working Again

Three complaints cover most of the fireplace calls we take in Bluffdale: it will not light, it lights and then goes out, or it burns fine but pushes smoke into the room.

Why it goes out, and why the weather gets blamed

A standing pilot proves itself by heating a thermocouple, which generates a very small voltage that holds the gas valve open. As the thermocouple ages its output drops. Long before it fails outright, it sits close to the threshold, and the valve starts dropping out intermittently. Because the first failures tend to happen on the coldest nights, when gas is being drawn hardest across the whole neighborhood, homeowners reasonably conclude the weather did it. The weather only revealed it.

Wind does play a genuine part here. Bluffdale sits at the constricted south end of the valley, and houses take gusts across the roofline that a house in the middle of the valley never sees. A direct-vent termination facing into that wind can be pressurized enough to disturb the flame pattern and unseat a marginal pilot. But a healthy unit tolerates that. If wind alone puts your fireplace out, the ignition components were already at the end of their service life, and replacing them is the honest fix rather than adding a wind guard and hoping.

Smoke in the room is usually a pressure problem

Newer construction is built tight, which is excellent for heating bills and awkward for anything that needs to exhaust. A powerful range hood, a couple of bath fans and a running clothes dryer can pull a house negative surprisingly fast, and the path of least resistance for replacement air is straight down your chimney. The fireplace has not failed. It has lost a tug of war.

You can test this yourself in five minutes. Crack a window on the far side of the house, then light the fire. If the spillage stops, the flue is fine and the house needs a make-up air strategy rather than chimney work.

The mechanical causes are the other half: a damper warped enough that it no longer opens fully, a smoke chamber parged so roughly that it generates turbulence instead of lift, a flue undersized for the firebox opening, or a cap so packed with soot and nesting material that it functions as a lid. We check every one of those before recommending anything that involves construction, because most smoking fireplaces are fixed with a service call rather than a rebuild.

Questions

Fireplace Repair in Bluffdale — common questions

My gas fireplace clicks but never lights. What is happening?

That clicking is an intermittent pilot igniter trying to spark. The usual causes are a fouled or misaligned electrode, a weak battery in the backup pack, or a flame-sense circuit that is no longer reading the flame. All three are service items rather than replacement.

Is it safe to keep using a fireplace that smokes a little?

No, and it matters more with gas than with wood. Smoke you can see means combustion products are entering the room, and with gas the byproduct you cannot see is carbon monoxide. Stop using it and have the venting checked.

Why does our fireplace only smoke when the furnace comes on?

Because the two appliances draw on the same supply of air. The furnace and the fireplace each need combustion and make-up air, and in a tightly built house the fireplace flue becomes the easiest inlet. This is a house pressure issue, not a chimney defect.

Our fireplace is twenty years old. Are parts still available?

Sometimes. Factory-built units carry a listing label with the manufacturer and model, and we check parts availability against that before quoting. If the parts are discontinued we will tell you plainly rather than sell you a repair that cannot be completed.
