Repairing American Fork Fireplaces That Never Drew Right
Some fireplaces stop working. Others never worked, and the owner has been apologizing for them at parties for fifteen years. In American Fork we see plenty of the second kind.
The fireplace that has always smoked
An open fireplace draws because the flue can carry away everything the opening lets in. That relationship is a ratio, and older fireplaces frequently get it wrong. A firebox opening built generously large, with a flue sized to the fashion of the day rather than to the opening, will spill smoke on every cold start no matter how clean the chimney is.
The good news is that this is fixable without rebuilding anything. Reducing the effective opening, usually by raising the hearth line or fitting a properly sized smoke guard, brings the ratio back and a fireplace that has misbehaved since the house was built starts drawing. Getting the size right is arithmetic, not guesswork, and it should be done before anyone suggests you need a new chimney.
The throat and the smoke chamber
Above the firebox, the throat narrows and then opens into the smoke chamber, and that transition has to be smooth. Masonry built by stepping bricks inward, left with every corner exposed, creates turbulence exactly where the gas needs to accelerate. Parging the smoke chamber to a smooth taper is one of the least glamorous repairs available and one of the most reliably effective on older American Fork fireplaces.
The damper in between is a cast iron plate that has spent decades in heat and condensation. Warped, rusted or off its pivot, it can sit half open and rob the throat of area. It is a small part with a big effect and it is worth having someone look at it.
Firebox and refractory
In a masonry firebox, the firebrick and the thin mortar joints between them take direct flame. When joints open up, heat reaches the brick behind, and eventually the structure behind that. In a manufactured firebox, the refractory panels crack instead, and a cracked panel is not cosmetic: it is the barrier between the fire and the steel shell. Panels are replaceable and must be replaced with the ones listed for that unit.
Gas units
On the gas side, the common repairs are a pilot that will not stay lit, an ignition system that clicks without lighting, and a fan that has stopped. Most of these are single components and none of them justify replacing an appliance that is otherwise sound.

We ask what it does and when, then look before quoting. A fireplace that smokes on startup and settles is a different fault from one that smokes throughout, and a fireplace that only misbehaves when the furnace runs is telling you about the house rather than the chimney.

Usually, yes. The most common cause is a firebox opening that is too large for the flue serving it, which no amount of sweeping will change. There are cracks in the panels inside our fireplace. Is that dangerous?
It should not be ignored. Refractory panels are the heat barrier between the fire and the metal shell of the firebox, and a crack that goes through lets heat reach material that was never meant to see it. Panels are a replaceable part and must match the unit, so we identify the model before ordering anything.
The fireplace smokes only when the furnace or the range hood is running. Why?
Because those appliances are pulling air out of the house, and the chimney is the easiest place for replacement air to come back in. When the flow reverses, smoke comes with it. That points to a make-up air problem rather than a chimney defect, and the remedy is a combustion air supply.
Do you repair fireplaces you did not install?
Yes, and that is the majority of what we do. With manufactured units the only real limitation is parts: if the manufacturer has discontinued the components a repair needs, we will tell you plainly rather than fit something that was not listed for it.
