Gas Fireplace Service for Lindon Homes
Not every gas fireplace is a sealed unit with a glass front. In this part of the valley a lot of them are older natural-draft appliances venting up a masonry chimney, and those deserve more attention than they usually get.
Two different kinds of appliance, two different risks
A modern direct-vent fireplace is sealed. Its combustion air comes from outside, its exhaust goes outside, and the room is never part of the circuit. As long as the glass gasket and the vent are intact, it is very safe.
A natural-draft or B-vent appliance is not sealed. It takes air from the room and relies on the chimney being warm enough to carry the exhaust up and out. That works well when the flue is in good condition and the house is not fighting it. It stops working when the chimney is cold, oversized, partially blocked, or when the house is pulled negative by a range hood, a bathroom fan or a clothes dryer. Then the exhaust comes into the room instead, and because gas exhaust is nearly invisible and nearly odorless, nothing tells you.
That matters more on the floor of Utah Valley than people expect. Lindon spends part of every winter under an inversion, with cold dense air parked over the valley for days at a time, and a heavy cold air mass outside is exactly the condition in which a marginal natural-draft appliance stops carrying its exhaust up the chimney.
What we test that a quick clean does not
We check for spillage at the draft hood with the appliance running, and we do it with the house in its worst realistic condition rather than its best: exhaust fans on, doors closed the way they would be on a winter evening. That is the test that finds a marginal vent, and it is the reason a service visit takes longer than people expect. We also verify the flue is clear and correctly sized for the appliance, since an old chimney built for a much larger heater will never get warm enough to draft a small gas fire reliably.
The rest of the visit
Burner and pilot assembly removed and cleaned, thermocouple or thermopile output measured, gas pressure checked, valve and safety shutoff proven, logs reset to the manufacturer's placement diagram, and the vent and its termination inspected. Log position is not decorative. A log an inch out of place puts flame where it does not belong and is the usual reason a set starts sooting.
Please take these seriously
Soot appearing where there was none, a smell of exhaust in the room, condensation on windows when the fireplace runs, headaches or drowsiness that ease when you leave the house, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounding. Turn the appliance off and get it looked at. Put a CO alarm on every level of the house regardless. They cost very little and they are the only warning you get.
Questions
Gas Fireplace in Lindon — common questions
How do I know if mine is sealed or not?
A sealed direct-vent unit has a fixed glass front that cannot be opened without tools and gaskets around it. An older natural-draft appliance usually has an open front or a decorative screen and a visible draft hood above the firebox. If you are unsure, we will identify it on the first visit.
Why do you want the kitchen fan on during the test?
Because that is when the appliance is most likely to fail. A powerful range hood can pull enough air out of a house to reverse a marginal chimney. Testing under easy conditions tells you nothing about the evening when someone is cooking.
Do gas fireplaces produce carbon monoxide?
All combustion does. In a properly working vented appliance it leaves through the flue and never reaches you. The concern is a vent that is not doing its job, which is exactly what the spillage test is for.
We hardly use it. Does it still need annual service?
Yes, and light users are often the ones with problems. An appliance that sits idle for most of the year is the one where a nest, a blocked pilot orifice or a rusted vent section has had time to develop unnoticed.
