Gas Fireplace and Log Set Service in Kearns

Gas took over from wood in most Kearns living rooms decades ago. The units that did it are now old enough that the safety parts inside them are the oldest thing in the room.

The appeal was obvious. A switch instead of a woodpile, no ash, no hauling, and no lighting a fire on a night the air quality board has asked people not to. What went with it was the annual habit. A wood fireplace visibly demands attention; a gas one gives no signal at all until the day it stops working or, worse, until it starts venting somewhere it should not.

It fires up and then drops out

This is most of our calls. In a standing-pilot system, the pilot flame heats a thermocouple or thermopile, which generates a very small voltage, and that voltage is what holds the main gas valve open. Dust, spider webs and oxidation on that probe drop the output below the threshold and the valve shuts. That is the safety interlock functioning correctly. Cleaning the pilot assembly, clearing the orifice and setting the flame to wrap the probe properly resolves a large share of them. When the millivolt reading is still low on a clean probe, the component is worn out and needs replacing, and we measure rather than guess.

Black glass and sooting logs

Ceramic logs are not decoration you can arrange to taste. Each one has a specified position, and moving them changes where the flame goes. Flame touching a log where it was not meant to leads to incomplete combustion, soot on the glass, soot in the room and eventually a deposit that restricts the burner. The fix is usually free: put the logs back where the manual says they go.

The parts of the job people skip

A real service includes the outside. On a direct-vent unit the terminal handles both intake and exhaust, and in Kearns we find them blocked by snow drifted against a low sidewall termination, by dryer lint blowing over from next door, and by dust that has caked the screen over several dry summers. We also test the safety shutoff, check the glass gasket, verify gas pressure, and vacuum out the firebox.

When we shut it off

If a vent is compromised or exhaust is entering the room, we turn the appliance off and tag it. Carbon monoxide is odorless and there is no version of that call where waiting is the right advice.

Questions

Gas Fireplace in Kearns — common questions

My gas fireplace has a smell when it first runs each winter.

A faint burning smell for the first hour or two of the season is usually dust burning off the burner and logs, and it fades. A sharp chemical smell, a smell that persists, or headaches while it runs are different and mean turn it off and call. Do not sit through those.

The pilot went out and will not relight.

Try the manufacturer's relight sequence once, holding the control in for the full time the label specifies. If it lights and drops again within a minute, the thermocouple circuit is not holding the valve, and that is a service call rather than a technique problem.

Do gas log sets in an old fireplace need the chimney swept?

The chimney still needs inspecting annually. Vented log sets exhaust up the original flue, so a blockage or a deteriorated liner matters just as much as it did with wood. There is far less deposit, but there is much more that can go unnoticed.

Is it worth servicing a twenty-year-old unit?

Often yes, because the burner and valve on many older units are still serviceable and parts remain available. We check availability first. If the model is unsupported and the fault is a proprietary part, we tell you that rather than billing for a search.
