Dryer Vents in Hideout: Long Runs, Tall Houses

Multi-level houses on steep ground produce the least forgiving dryer duct arrangement there is: a long run with a lot of vertical rise and more elbows than anyone intended.

A dryer has a fixed amount of push. Everything the exhaust has to get past between the drum and the outside air consumes some of it, and manufacturers publish a maximum equivalent length for exactly that reason. That figure is not just the straight footage. Every elbow counts as several extra feet, and on a house stepped down a slope with the laundry on one level and the only sensible termination two levels away, the real duct can exceed the appliance's rating before anyone has done a load.

Vertical rise is the part that bites

Lint leaving a dryer is buoyant only while the air is moving quickly. In a horizontal run, air that slows still carries most of the lint to the exit. In a vertical run, air that slows lets the lint fall back down the pipe, where it accumulates at the base of the rise and at the inside of every elbow. That produces a self-worsening cycle: the buildup narrows the pipe, the narrower pipe moves less air, the slower air drops more lint. Houses on steep lots here nearly always have that geometry, which is why annual cleaning is a starting point rather than a generous one.

The other thing to look at is what is behind the appliance. Flexible foil or plastic hose is ribbed on the inside and catches lint by design, and when the dryer gets pushed back against the wall the hose gets crushed into a kink. Rigid or semi-rigid metal transition is inexpensive and is the right material.

Terminations, air balance and cold

The outside end matters as much as the duct. On tight modern construction, running a dryer removes a significant volume of air from the house, and if the building has nowhere easy to draw replacement air the dryer is fighting the house as well as the duct. The symptom is a dryer that seems weak everywhere and gets worse when the bath fans are running.

Then there is the winter version: a termination flapper frozen shut after a thaw and refreeze, or a vent low enough on the wall that snow banks over it. We clear and check the termination on every visit, because a perfectly clean duct with a blocked exit performs exactly like a blocked duct and is just as much of a fire risk.

Questions

Dryer Vents in Hideout — common questions

Our laundry is a long way from an outside wall. Does that matter?

It matters a great deal. Manufacturers publish a maximum equivalent duct length, and every elbow counts as several feet of straight pipe against it. A long run with several turns can exceed the rating, which shows up as long dry times and a duct that needs cleaning more often.

How often should a Hideout dryer vent be cleaned?

At least annually, and more often where the run is long or has significant vertical rise. Vertical sections let lint settle back down the pipe rather than leaving, so those ducts load noticeably faster than a short horizontal run in a single-story house.

Would a booster fan fix a long run?

Sometimes, and it has to be a fan listed for dryer exhaust rather than a general inline fan, because ordinary fans have blades and housings that collect lint and become the hazard. Where the duct can instead be shortened or rerouted, that is usually the better answer.

The dryer works fine until we run the bath fans. Why?

That is a make-up air problem rather than a duct problem. A tight house with several exhaust appliances running has to pull replacement air from somewhere, and the dryer is competing for it. It is worth mentioning when we visit, because it changes what the right fix is.
