Chimney, Stove and Fireplace Service for Cedar Fort

Cedar Fort sits out on the floor of Cedar Valley with open ground running away from it in every direction. Nothing upwind breaks the weather, and in a good many houses here the stove is not decoration but the heating system.

What we do here

Our services in Cedar Fort

Everything listed below is work we do out in Cedar Valley. Since it is a drive either way, we would rather look over the whole system in one visit than come back for it three times.

Burning for heat, on an open valley floor

An appliance that never gets a night off

Deposit builds according to how many hours the appliance burns and how cool it burns, not according to the calendar. The habit that keeps a house warm until morning out here is the same habit that coats a flue: the air is closed down, the firebox drops to a slow smolder, and combustion goes incomplete for eight or nine hours at a stretch. Unburned gas leaving a cool firebox condenses on the first cold surface it reaches. A hearth lit a couple of evenings a month can comfortably go a full year between sweeps. Something carrying a house from October through to spring often cannot, and it is worth a look partway through the season rather than a surprise in February.

The geometry of the install matters more than the appliance

Stoves are well made and they mostly do what they claim. What we find causing trouble is everything between the stove and the sky. Connector pipe that runs too far horizontally loses draft and collects deposit at the low point. A pass-through where the pipe crosses a wall or ceiling needs the correct insulated fitting, not a hole and a plate. Clearance to anything combustible has to be the figure on the appliance label rather than the one that felt about right. And the flue has to finish high enough above the roof to get clear of it, because a top that sits down in the turbulence coming over the ridge will backdraft on a windy night no matter how good the fire is.

Cold mornings and the reluctant relight

On a still, clear night cold air settles onto the valley floor and stays there. By dawn an unlit exterior flue holds a column of air heavier than the air in the house, and the chimney is effectively running backwards. Strike a match under that and the first smoke comes into the room. It is not a fault, and replacing parts will not change it. Warming the flue first, with a rolled paper torch held up under the damper or by building the fire so it lights from the top down, restores the direction before there is any smoke to spill.

Questions

Chimney & fireplace questions from Cedar Fort homeowners

Why does my fireplace smell in the summer?

That's creosote meeting summer humidity, with negative house pressure pulling the smell down the flue and into the room. For Cedar Fort homes, a sweep, a top-sealing damper and deodorizing treatment clear it up.

What maintenance does a gas fireplace require?

Annual service, same as wood. On Cedar Fort gas units we clean burners, test valves and gaskets, inspect venting and polish the glass — small wear items that become no-heat emergencies if they're ignored.

What is creosote and why is it dangerous?

Creosote is the combustible residue smoke leaves on flue walls, and it builds through three stages — the final glazed stage being the worst. It's the fuel for chimney fires, which is why Cedar Fort chimneys need regular sweeping.

How much does a chimney sweep cost in Cedar Fort?

Pricing depends on buildup, access and whether you add an inspection, but most Cedar Fort sweeps land in a predictable, quoted-upfront range. Call 801-515-3339 and we'll give you an exact figure before we ever roll a truck.
