Servicing Gas Fireplaces and Inserts in Alpine
Gas appliances get called maintenance-free, which is how a fifteen-year-old insert ends up with a sooted burner, a tired thermopile and a vent nobody has looked into since it was installed.
What actually wears out
There is no fuel residue to sweep out of a gas unit, so the failures are electrical and mechanical instead. The thermopile sits in the pilot flame and generates the small voltage that holds the main valve open. It degrades slowly. Long before it dies you get the classic symptom: the fireplace lights, runs for a while, then shuts off and will not relight until it cools. That is a thermopile losing millivolts under load, and it is a part, not a new fireplace.
Behind that, in rough order of how often we find them: pilot hoods clogged with dust and pet hair, gas valves that have stiffened, glass gaskets gone hard so the sealed chamber no longer seals, and blower motors seized from years of sitting still through summer.
Elevation is worth a look at the data plate
Alpine sits high on the bench below Lone Peak. Gas appliances are rated for a range of installation altitudes, and above a certain elevation many manufacturers specify a different orifice or a high-altitude conversion so the burner gets the right fuel-to-air ratio. Where that has been missed, the unit runs rich, and rich burning is what puts black film on the inside of the glass and soot on the logs. If your glass keeps hazing over within weeks of being cleaned, the setup is worth checking against the label rather than just cleaning the glass again.
The vent is part of the appliance
Direct-vent units draw combustion air in and push exhaust out through the same terminal, and that terminal is on an outside wall. On exposed Alpine lots those terminals collect blown snow and, occasionally, nesting material. A restricted terminal upsets the balance the whole sealed system depends on, and safety switches will start shutting the unit down. We check the vent run and the terminal on every service, because a burner tune on a blocked vent is wasted money.
Log placement is not decorative
Ceramic logs sit in specific positions given in the manual. Moved even an inch or two, a log can sit in the flame path and cause incomplete combustion, which produces soot and carbon monoxide. If someone has cleaned or rearranged the set, putting the logs back where the manufacturer put them is often the entire repair.
Once a year, before you need it
Service in the warm months. The unit gets cleaned, the pilot and burner get tuned, the safeties get tested, the glass gasket gets checked and the vent gets inspected. The failures above are all cheap when caught in September and all inconvenient in December.
Questions
Gas Fireplace in Alpine — common questions
Our gas fireplace lights but shuts off after twenty minutes. What is that?
Almost always a weakening thermopile. It produces enough voltage cold to open the valve, then drops below the holding threshold once everything heats up. The part is inexpensive and the repair is straightforward, but the symptom will keep getting worse until it is replaced.
Does a gas fireplace really need annual service if it looks fine?
Yes, and the reason is that the things that fail are not visible. A pilot hood packed with dust, a hardened glass gasket and a partially restricted vent terminal all look like nothing from the room. Annual service is mostly about catching those before they turn into a cold December call.
Why does the glass keep going black?
Black film on the glass means the burner is running rich or a log is sitting in the flame path. On a unit installed at Alpine's elevation it is worth confirming the appliance is set up for the altitude the manufacturer specifies, because an incorrect orifice produces exactly this and cleaning the glass never fixes it.
Can you service a gas insert that is twenty years old, or is it time to replace?
Usually we can service it. The judgement call is parts availability: once a manufacturer stops making the valve or the thermopile assembly for a discontinued model, repair stops being reliable. We will tell you which side of that line your unit is on rather than let you spend twice.
