Why Elk Ridge Gas Fireplaces Act Up in the Cold

A gas fireplace that behaves oddly on cold nights and perfectly on mild ones is not haunted. At this elevation it is usually a fuel and air mixture problem.

There is one thing about gas appliances up here that almost nobody is told at the point of sale, and it explains a good share of the service calls we take from this bench.

Appliances are rated for sea level

Manufacturers certify gas appliances at sea level and publish separate instructions for installations above roughly two thousand feet, because air gets thinner as you climb and the burner's fixed orifice keeps delivering the same amount of gas into progressively less oxygen. The result is a mixture that is too rich. In practice that looks like tall lazy yellow flames, sooting on the glass and on the log tops, a stronger smell in the room, and a pilot that lacks the strength to hold the valve open reliably. Correcting it is a matter of the right orifice and burner setup for the altitude, following what the manufacturer publishes for that model. It is straightforward when it is done. The trouble is that it is easy to skip, and an appliance moved into a house second-hand, or bought online and fitted by a general handyman, frequently never had it done at all.

Pilot problems that come and go

The most common single complaint we get from Elk Ridge is a pilot that drops out on cold nights. Owners assume the cold itself is the cause. It is a contributor, because a cold flue and a cold vent make draft behave differently, but the underlying issue is usually a pilot flame that is marginal to begin with: partly blocked by dust or spider webbing in the orifice, misaligned so it is not properly enveloping the thermocouple, or set for the wrong altitude. Any of those gives you an appliance that works in November and quits in January. Cleaning the pilot assembly, repositioning the flame and measuring the millivolt output rather than judging it by eye is what actually settles it.

The annual service, item by item

Glass out, gasket inspected, burner and pilot cleaned, logs cleaned and reset to the manufacturer's diagram, thermocouple or thermopile output measured, safety shutoff tested, gas pressure checked at the appliance, vent run and termination inspected, blower cleaned, then a full test burn with the flame pattern watched from cold. On a direct-vent unit the vent joints in the concealed run get checked too, because a joint that has separated inside a chase is invisible and serious.

Carbon monoxide

Sooting means incomplete combustion, and incomplete combustion means carbon monoxide is being produced. In a sealed appliance that is exhausted outside, but seals fail. Put a working carbon monoxide alarm on every level of the house whatever else you do. We are licensed and insured, and we will tell you to stop using an appliance if we think it is unsafe, rather than quoting for it and leaving it running in the meantime.

Questions

Gas Fireplace in Elk Ridge — common questions

My gas fireplace has yellow, sooty flames. Is that just how it looks?

No. A correctly set gas fireplace burns with a mostly steady flame that does not deposit soot on the glass or the log tops. Yellow, sooty burning at this elevation often traces back to an appliance never set up for altitude, and it is worth having checked rather than living with.

The pilot only goes out on the coldest nights. What is it?

Usually a pilot that is weak year-round and only fails when conditions get harder. Dust or webbing in the orifice, a flame not properly wrapping the thermocouple, or altitude setup are the three usual causes. We measure the output rather than judging the flame by eye.

We bought a used insert. Does it need anything special before we fit it?

Yes. Beyond checking it is intact and complete, it needs to be set up for the fuel it will burn and for this altitude, following the manufacturer's own instructions for the model. That is the step most often skipped on secondhand units.

How often should a gas fireplace be serviced?

Once a year, before you start using it for the season. There is no soot to remove in the way a wood flue needs sweeping, but the safety devices, the seals and the venting are exactly the parts that fail quietly and give no warning.
