Sweeping Old Valley-Floor Chimneys in South Salt Lake

Most of the brick in South Salt Lake went up before central heating meant a furnace in the basement and a thermostat on the wall. The chimneys came first, and everything since has been fitted into them.

These flues were designed for a different fuel

A chimney built in the first half of the last century was sized and shaped for coal, and later for oil. Coal smoke is hot, and it moves. A modern wood fire in a modern damped-down fireplace produces cooler exhaust, and cooler exhaust in a flue sized for something hotter slows down, cools further, and drops its load on the walls on the way up. That is the mechanism behind the heavy deposits we find in the older housing here, and it has nothing to do with how carefully the owner burns.

The second thing we find is what those flues are lined with, which is often nothing. Unlined brick was normal for decades. It works until the mortar joints between the bricks start to open, at which point a flue that was never fireproof to begin with is sharing heat directly with whatever the chimney passes through. Sweeping such a flue is straightforward. Knowing whether it should be used afterwards requires actually looking.

Short chimneys and close neighbors

Single-story houses on tight lots give you short chimneys, and a short chimney has less height to generate draft with. Where a taller building or a mature tree stands close on the windward side, that already-marginal draft gets disrupted further. Owners describe smoke pushing into the room in certain wind directions and not others. Sweeping will not change that, but noticing it during the visit means the conversation moves on to height and cap design rather than being repeated every year.

How we work in an occupied house

Small rooms need more containment, not less, so the opening is sealed and a HEPA-filtered vacuum runs the entire time. We brush the flue, clear the smoke shelf, and check that the damper still moves, which in houses this age it often does not. Then you get photographs of what is up there. On an unlined or heavily deteriorated flue we will show you the images and tell you plainly whether we would light a fire in it, which is a more useful answer than a clean bill on a sweep alone.

Questions

Chimney Sweep in South Salt Lake — common questions

Our house is from the 1930s and nobody knows if the chimney is lined. How do we find out?

A camera does it in one visit. From below you cannot tell, because the visible part of the flue at the damper looks much the same either way. Unlined brick flues are common in houses of that era here and it is worth knowing before the next fire rather than after.

We only burn on the days when air quality allows it. Does that change the sweep interval?

Not as much as you would expect. What matters is total burning and how the fires were run, and people who can only burn occasionally tend to light long, slow, damped fires that deposit heavily. Once a year remains the sensible baseline.

Smoke comes into the room only when the wind is from one direction. Why?

Usually because something taller nearby is disturbing the airflow over a short chimney. On the older single-story houses here that is a common cause. The fix is generally height, cap design, or both, and we will tell you which after looking at what is around it.

The chimney has not been used in decades. Is sweeping enough to make it usable?

Sweeping is only the first step. A long-idle flue needs inspecting for liner condition, blockages, nests and any appliance that has been vented into it since. We would rather inspect first and tell you what it needs than sweep it and imply it is ready.
