Planning a Fireplace for a Draper Great Room

The rooms these go into here are frequently two stories tall with a wall of glass facing the mountains. That is a lovely space and a genuinely demanding one to heat.

The east side of Draper climbs several hundred feet up onto the bench, and the houses built up there over the last twenty-five years tend to share a shape: a great room open to the second floor, a tall stone or tile face, and a wall of glass on the downhill side. That shape is why we size on air volume rather than square footage here, and why the vent run, not the hearth, usually decides where the appliance can actually go.

Volume, not floor area

Appliances are commonly matched to square footage, which is a shortcut that fails in exactly this kind of room. A great room with a vaulted ceiling has two or three times the air volume of a flat-ceilinged room with the same footprint, and heat that rises to a ceiling twelve feet above head height is not warming anybody. We size on volume and on how the room is used, and in tall rooms we generally want a unit with a blower so the heat is moved rather than left to stratify.

The vent run governs the design

In a two-story great room the appliance is at floor level and the roof is a long way up. That vertical run has rules about the number of offsets, the maximum horizontal segments and the required clearance to combustibles all the way along, and every one of those constraints is set by the appliance manufacturer rather than by preference. The route has to be resolved before the framing for the surround goes in, because a chase built to a design that the vent cannot legally follow gets rebuilt.

Two-story stone and what it hides

Full-height stone or tile facings are the popular finish here, and they conceal every service behind them permanently. That means the gas shutoff, the junction box for the blower and any control wiring need to be accessible after the finish goes on, through a properly located access panel. It is a small detail at framing stage and an expensive one to retrofit through a stone wall later.

The second fireplace downstairs

Walkout and daylight basements make a second hearth easy, because the exterior wall is at grade and a direct-vent unit can terminate through it with a short run. Worth knowing: a sealed direct-vent appliance is also the right choice down there for a reason that has nothing to do with convenience, since it draws combustion air from outside and is unaffected by the negative pressure a tall house creates at its lowest level.

Sequence

Survey, then appliance selection, then gas and electrical rough-in, then venting, then framing, then finish. Doing it in that order costs nothing extra. Doing it in the other order is where hearth projects go wrong.

Our great room has a very high ceiling. What size fireplace do we need?

Size on the volume of air rather than the floor area, because a vaulted room holds far more of it. A unit with a blower is usually worth specifying too, since without air movement the heat collects near the ceiling where nobody benefits from it.

Can the fireplace go on the window wall?

Sometimes, but it constrains the venting and often the glazing. A direct-vent unit needs a compliant termination with clearances to windows and to anything above it. We work out whether the location is viable before the design commits to it.

We want a floor-to-ceiling stone surround. Anything to watch for?

Two things: the clearance dimensions in the appliance manual, which govern how close combustible framing and mantel projections can be, and access. Put a concealed access panel where the gas valve and blower wiring are, because once the stone is up they are behind it for good.

When should we book this work?

Spring or summer if the schedule allows. Lead times on appliances and the sequencing with framing and finish trades both go more smoothly outside the heating season, and it means the unit is installed and commissioned before you want to use it.
